Kenyan Runner Edwin Koech Wins 2025 Lagos City Marathon

Kenyan athlete Edwin Kibet Koech has emerged as the winner of the men’s category in the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, held on Saturday.

Koech finished the 42km race in 2 hours and 14 minutes, securing the $50,000 prize. This marks his second victory in the competition, having previously won the 2023 edition.

The marathon attracted about 37,000 runners who participated in both the 10km and 42km races.

According to the General Manager of the race, retired Nigerian long jumper Yusuf Ali, this number was based on the running kits distributed from the over 60,000 registered participants.

The 42km race began at the National Stadium in Surulere at 6:30 am, while the 10km race started at Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki at 9:30 am, with both events ending at Eko Atlantic City.

Now in its 10th year, the Lagos City Marathon holds a World Athletics Gold Label, and the organizers are aiming for the prestigious Platinum Label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to attain that status.

Ahead of the event, the Lagos State Government had announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion along designated routes from 5 am to 1 pm to facilitate the smooth running of the race.
