LASU Journal Becomes First from Africa Digitised by Research Africa to Gain Google Scholar Indexing
A digitised academic journal from Lagos State University (LASU) has become the first to be indexed on Google Scholar under a new initiative by Research Africa, marking a significant step in promoting academic visibility for research from the Global South.
The journal’s inclusion follows the pilot phase of Research Africa’s digitisation project, which focuses on converting print-only academic content from African universities into accessible, globally searchable formats.
Founder of Research Africa, Olasunkanmi Arowolo, described the development as a strategic breakthrough in the quest for research equity.

“This is a significant step in addressing the imbalance in global academic visibility,” Arowolo said. “We are proud to have begun this journey with Lagos State University, an institution known for excellence, and look forward to expanding this impact across the continent.”

The indexing on Google Scholar affirms the academic quality of the journal and opens up new pathways for citation, access, and academic collaboration.
As a next step, Research Africa plans to join Crossref—an international organisation that provides Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for scholarly content. This will enable all articles hosted on its platform to become citable, trackable, and permanently linked through a robust metadata infrastructure.
The project aims to integrate African research more deeply into global academic systems, improving the visibility, impact, and sustainability of scholarly work from the continent.
Research Africa has invited editors, institutions, and researchers across the Global South to collaborate in expanding the reach and preservation of Africa’s academic contributions via digitals@researchafrica.pub or editor@researchafrica.pub.
