Liverpool retire No. 20 shirt to honour Diogo Jota
Liverpool Football Club has officially retired their No. 20 shirt across the first team, academy and women’s side as a tribute to forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died on 3 July 2025, in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, along with his brother, André Silva.
This historic gesture is the first time a squad number has been withdrawn in Liverpool’s 133-year history.

The decision came after thorough consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso whom he married just 11 days before his death and close family members.
Fenway Sports Group’s head of football, Michael Edwards, emphasised its significance, saying Jota “won us number 20” and that retiring the shirt will ensure his legacy lives on forever.
