Liverpool Sack Arne Slot After Poor Title Defence, Iraola Linked With Job
Liverpool have dismissed manager Arne Slot after two seasons in charge, with the club citing the need for a “change of direction” following a disappointing campaign.
The decision was announced Saturday, ending Slot’s tenure less than a year after he delivered Liverpool a record-equalling 20th English league title in his debut season.
The Dutchman’s second season collapsed despite Liverpool spending a Premier League-record £450 million on transfers. The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League, 25 points behind champions Arsenal. They lost 19 matches across all competitions and collected only 60 league points — their lowest total since the 2015/16 season.
Fan frustration grew over cautious tactics and uninspiring performances. Tensions inside the squad became public when Mohamed Salah posted on social media calling for a return to “heavy metal football”, a clear reference to Jurgen Klopp’s high-energy style. Several Liverpool players liked the post.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Slot. The Spaniard guided Bournemouth into Europe for the first time in the club’s history last season.
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group said the sacking was not a criticism of Slot’s ability. “That does not diminish the work Arne has done here… Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach,” the club said in a statement.
Slot leaves Anfield with one Premier League title and the club’s gratitude. Liverpool confirmed a search for his successor is underway.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said he was “gutted” for Slot but understood the decision. “Taking the reins from the great Jurgen Klopp… was a tough task and big shoes to fill. I think he did it seamlessly,” Gerrard told TNT Sports.
