Power Outage In Spain And Portugal
A widespread power outage hit large parts of Spain and Portugal on Monday, causing chaos and disruption to daily life. The outage, which began around midday, left millions without electricity, affecting homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.
The power cut had a significant impact on transportation, with trains cancelled and evacuated in some regions. Traffic lights stopped working, and delays mounted at airports, with 96 flights cancelled in Portugal and 45 in Spain. Businesses were severely affected, with some Ikea branches switching to backup generators and the Madrid Open Tennis event cancelled.
Authorities warned residents to stay off the roads and only call emergency services in truly urgent cases. Some hospitals implemented emergency plans, halting routine work. The Spanish grid operator reported that restoring power could take several hours, with some areas potentially remaining without power for up to 10 hours.
The cause of the outage remains unknown, with no indication of a cyber attack. Authorities in Spain and Portugal are still investigating the cause of the power cuts. By early evening, some areas reported the lights were back on, with the Spanish grid operator confirming power restoration in several areas.
The outage affected daily life, with queues forming at cash machines and some petrol stations closed. Residents were advised to stay put and minimize movements. The power outage also affected nuclear power plants, which automatically stopped, and oil refineries, which halted operations.
The Spanish grid operator reported that power was being restored in several areas, but some regions may face prolonged outages. Portugal’s power firm REN estimated that full power restoration could take up to a week. Authorities are working to restore power and investigate the cause of the outage.
