NELFUND Embarks on Tech-Driven Student Loan Revolution

By Happiness Edeawe

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed loans to over 320,000 students, with more undergoing verification, according to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Akintunde Sawyerr.

Speaking at a Stakeholders Engagement Session and Technical Workshop on NELFUND System Automation and Loan Application Processes, Sawyerr assured that the FUND is working towards building a technology-driven system to improve easy access to its loans.

“We are targeting a platform where students can access loans with confidence and without stress, in a manner that is transparent and accountable,” Sawyerr said. “Our mission goes beyond providing loans; it’s about opening doors for young Nigerians to access education, regardless of their background or location.”

The NELFUND boss emphasized that the FUND’s initiative is a shared mission that requires collaboration with government institutions, the private sector, and other stakeholders. “We know we can’t do it alone. This is a shared mission that belongs to all of us,” Sawyerr added.

NELFUND’s Executive Director, Operations, Mr. Iyal Mustapha, disclosed that the FUND has paid for at least 320,000 students, with more verifications ongoing. Mustapha explained that the difference between registered students and those who completed the application process was due to students’ inability to complete the process, possibly due to data issues or lack of interest.

To address this, NELFUND plans to connect directly to institutional portals to obtain student data and facilitate loan applications. “We want to close this gap, and with your support, we’ll be able to do so, ensuring all eligible students access the Institutional Loan,” Mustapha said.

The workshop aimed to enhance collaboration between NELFUND and educational institutions, ensuring a seamless loan application process. Sawyerr urged participants to engage fully, sharing their experiences and challenges, to build a system that is functional, sustainable, and transformative.

As NELFUND continues to work towards making education more accessible and affordable for Nigerian students, the FUND’s leadership emphasized the importance of technology in driving this initiative. “By leveraging technology, we can streamline the loan application process, reduce bureaucracy, and ensure that students can access loans with ease,” Sawyerr said.

The Stakeholders Engagement Session and Technical Workshop marked a significant step towards achieving NELFUND’s vision of a technology-driven system for student loan access. With the FUND’s commitment to collaboration and innovation, students can look forward to a more efficient and accessible loan application process.

NELFUND’s initiative has the potential to transform the educational landscape in Nigeria, providing opportunities for young Nigerians to access quality education and achieve their academic goals. As the FUND continues to work towards its mission, it is expected that more students will benefit from the loan program, enabling them to pursue their educational aspirations without financial constraints.

The success of NELFUND’s initiative will depend on the level of collaboration and support from educational institutions, government agencies, and other stakeholders. However, with the FUND’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and innovation, there is optimism that the initiative will have a positive impact on the educational sector in Nigeria.
