Newcastle United opened their Premier League season with frustration as a lack of clinical finishing condemned them to a 0-0 draw against ten-man Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side created chance after chance but failed to convert, allowing Villa — who played the last 25 minutes with a man down — to escape with a point.

The Magpies made a lively start and should have taken the lead inside two minutes when Anthony Elanga, on his competitive debut, raced clear, only for stand-in keeper Marco Bizot to block smartly. Harvey Barnes was a constant threat from the left, supplying Anthony Gordon with a golden opportunity that he headed over, before setting up Elanga who volleyed wide at the far post. Gordon came closest before the interval, his deflected strike pushed behind by Bizot.

Villa looked brighter in the second half, testing Nick Pope through Boubacar Kamara and Ollie Watkins, but the turning point came in the 66th minute when Ezri Konsa dragged down Gordon as the last man, earning a straight red.

With Villa reduced to ten, Newcastle poured forward in search of a winner, yet their cutting edge deserted them. Barnes saw a thunderous volley blocked by Matty Cash, while late pressure failed to break down a stubborn Villa back line.

At full-time, the Magpies were left ruing their profligacy in front of goal — a dominant performance undone by wayward finishing. For Villa, however, the goalless draw felt like a small victory, earned through sheer defensive resilience.
