Nigerian Youth Urged to Challenge Status Quo at LEAP Africa Youth Leadership Debate

At a recent Youth Leadership Debate organized by LEAP Africa’s Youth Leadership Development Programme, stakeholders called on Nigerian youth to harness their potential and challenge existing leadership norms to drive national progress.

The debate, which featured the Northeast – Northwest regional quarterfinals, showcased young Nigerians passionately discussing key policy issues affecting the country. Jinjiri Garba, Chairman of the Bauchi State Network of Civil Society Organisations, delivered a goodwill message highlighting the urgency for change. “We need to change the narrative. Youth are in a better position to take up leadership roles, as people are demanding,” he said, emphasizing the readiness of young Nigerians to lead with their knowledge and energy.

Garba also praised the participants, especially the increasing involvement of young women. “Women are now stepping forward to speak. Previously, they were shy and confined themselves. I see women rising, and I am really impressed,” he noted.

Ijeoma Kalu, the programme coordinator at LEAP Africa and head of the Youth Leadership Development Programme, explained that the debate is part of an initiative funded by the Nigerian Youth Futures Fund to build leadership capacity among young people. “This debate trains youth not only to speak on policy matters but to engage in research, present informed opinions, and foster dialogue between young people and policymakers,” she said.

Representatives from various ministries and agencies attended the event, underscoring its significance as a platform for youth to offer recommendations on national policy issues.

Following regional competitions across Nigeria, the winning teams will advance to a national finale. Winners will receive prizes designed to support advocacy campaigns in their communities, empowering them to continue influencing positive change.
