Okoye Handed Two-Month Ban Over Betting Incident
Udinese and Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been suspended for two months by the Italian Football Federation after he was found guilty of misconduct in connection with a betting-related incident during a Serie A match against Lazio in the 2023/2024 season.
The 24-year-old was accused of deliberately getting booked during the match in a move that investigators linked to unusual betting patterns. The Italian football authorities say Okoye’s action was aimed at influencing betting outcomes, a charge that led to a disciplinary probe.
Following the investigation, the National Federal Tribunal ruled that Okoye would be barred from participating in any official match for two months, with the ban starting from the beginning of the 2025/2026 season.

The ruling means Okoye will miss six matches, including Udinese’s Coppa Italia tie against Carrarese on August 18, and the team’s first five Serie A games. He is expected to return on October 19, when Udinese play away to Cremonese.
The decision has sparked reactions from fans and football observers in both Italy and Nigeria, with many expressing concern over the growing influence of betting on players’ conduct.
Okoye, who was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, has faced a dip in form in recent years and struggled to hold down a regular spot at club and national levels. The ban now casts fresh uncertainty on his future with both Udinese and the Super Eagles.
As of the time of filing this report, Okoye has not issued any public statement in response to the sanction.
