OSGF Retracts Initial Denial, Confirms Akume Approved Odunuga’s Appointment
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has confirmed the appointment of Mr Yomi Odunuga as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
The clarification became necessary following earlier contradictory statements regarding Mr Odunuga’s appointment.
Over the weekend, reports circulated on social media and various online platforms indicating that Mr Odunuga had been appointed. However, these reports were apparently refuted in a statement attributed to the Director of Information and Public Relations at the OSGF, Mr Segun Imohiosen.
That statement read in part:
“The attention of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has been drawn to news currently circulating on social media and certain online platforms regarding the purported appointment of Yomi Odunuga as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The Office wishes to clarify that the SGF has not, at any time, made such an appointment, nor has any official communication confirming the same been issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations.”
However, the narrative was later contradicted by a subsequent statement issued by Mr Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF. Titled “Yomi Odunuga Actually Appointed by SGF, Undergoing Documentation”, the statement affirmed that the appointment had, in fact, been made.
Mr Kuanum explained:
“It has become necessary to issue the following clarification from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, His Excellency Senator George Akume, that seasoned and respected journalist Yomi Odunuga has indeed been appointed as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to his office.”

He noted that the appointment received Senator Akume’s approval on Thursday, 10 July 2025, after which Mr Odunuga was directed to assume duties.
On the same day, acting in his official capacity, Mr Odunuga issued a statement to the press dispelling speculation linking the SGF with aspirations for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kuanum further stated that Mr Odunuga is currently undergoing standard onboarding procedures in line with the Public Service Rules (PSR) to ensure smooth integration into the OSGF structure.
The SGF, he added, has expressed confidence in Mr Odunuga’s ability to enhance the public image of the office, describing him as a journalist with a distinguished track record.
“Senator Akume reaffirms his confidence in Mr Odunuga’s wealth of experience and his capability to contribute meaningfully to the communication strategy of the OSGF,” the statement read.
