Police Retirees Deserve Better, Says Obi Amid Protests
Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has called for urgent reforms to address the poor pension conditions fueling protests by retired Nigeria Police Force members.
Speaking on Thursday, Obi described the neglect of these retirees as a national failure that demands immediate action.
He highlighted the sacrifices of police officers who risked their lives for Nigeria’s safety, only to face hardship in retirement. “These retirees put their lives on the line for us. Abandoning them now is unfair and sends a terrible signal to active officers,” Obi said.

With Nigeria grappling with rising insecurity, Obi warned that neglecting retirees could erode trust among serving officers. He urged the government to roll out a fair pension system that honors their service. “This isn’t just about justice, it’s about strengthening the morale of our security forces,” he said.
Obi stressed that caring for retirees is critical to sustaining peace and maintaining the loyalty of those still serving. “A nation that forgets its protectors risks its own security,” he concluded.
