“President Tinubu Embarks on Historic State Visit to Saint Lucia, Strengthening Diplomatic and Cultural Ties”

The Nigerian Presidency has provided clarification on President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to Saint Lucia, emphasizing its significance as a landmark diplomatic and cultural mission. According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the visit is aimed at rekindling Nigeria’s ancestral bonds, igniting new diplomatic, cultural, and economic possibilities between the two nations.

Saint Lucia, with its deep ancestral roots connected to West Africa, particularly Nigeria, has expressed excitement over President Tinubu’s visit. The Presidency highlighted that citizens of Saint Lucia are eager to strengthen their bonds with African nations, with which they share ancestral links.

This visit is part of Nigeria’s efforts within the framework of South-South cooperation and the country’s Four D’s foreign policy strategy, which encompasses Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography. Notably, Saint Lucia serves as the headquarters of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States and acts as a gateway to the 15 CARICOM member states, boasting a combined GDP of over $130 billion.

The Presidency underscored the historical ties between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, referencing notable figures such as Sir Darnley Alexander, a Saint Lucian jurist who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1975 to 1979. Additionally, the visit aligns with the African Union’s Sixth Region agenda, which recognizes the African diaspora as a key development partner.

During his visit, President Tinubu is scheduled to engage in several significant activities. These include delivering a special address to a joint session of Saint Lucia’s bi-cameral Parliament, visiting the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College to explore educational partnerships, and attending a reception hosted by Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister for the Nigerian community.

The Nigerian Presidency has urged citizens to view the visit in its proper context—a strategic and historic engagement that furthers Nigeria’s interests and strengthens its global partnerships. Given that Saint Lucia has hosted fewer than 10 official state visits since gaining independence in 1979, President Tinubu’s visit marks a notable diplomatic milestone, coming 27 years after President Nelson Mandela’s visit in 1998.

The visit also highlights Nigeria’s growing cultural footprint, particularly through Afrobeats, Nollywood, and literature, which are making a significant impact on Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean. Furthermore, the Presidency emphasized that Saint Lucia’s stable parliamentary democracy makes it a natural ally for Nigeria, which has enjoyed 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

President Tinubu’s state visit to Saint Lucia is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to deepening diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties with the Caribbean nation and the broader CARICOM bloc. The visit is poised to strengthen ancestral bonds, foster educational partnerships, and advance Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
