The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital chapter in Kaduna, has suspended its six-day warning strike.

The chapter’s president, Dr. Josiah Yakubu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Kaduna.

According to him, the suspension followed an emergency congress held on Saturday, alongside a series of meetings and interventions by both the national and state leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

He announced that work would resume on Tuesday by 8:00 a.m., while other resident doctors at the hospital are expected to resume by 10:00 a.m.

Yakubu said the congress noted that, since the commencement of the strike, the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government had intervened and initiated arbitration on behalf of the state government.

He explained that the latest meeting between NMA leadership and state officials, convened at the instance of the Secretary to the State Government, provided a more collaborative environment—unlike the initial meeting during which some doctors received termination and warning letters.

“It became clear that those actions were unilaterally taken by the management of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital,” he said.

The two-hour meeting allowed both parties to better understand the doctors’ concerns and explore practical solutions to end the industrial dispute without compromising healthcare delivery in the state.

Yakubu said the state government had acknowledged the legitimacy of the doctors’ demands and committed to resolving them. He noted that the Secretary to the State Government requested two months to address issues related to manpower and remuneration.

He added that a cost implication document for the transition from CONMESS 2014 to CONMESS 2024 had been submitted to the SSG for onward transmission to the governor.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was jointly signed by the SSG, Chairman of NMA Kaduna State, National President of NARD, President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) Kaduna, and President of ARD BDTH.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to communicate the outcome to the congresses of ARD Kaduna and ARD BDTH for further appraisal.

Yakubu also stated that the leadership of NMA and NARD had pledged to closely monitor the implementation process until all demands were satisfactorily met.
