Dozens of retired police officers braved the rain to converge on the National Assembly gate in Abuja, protesting their inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Undeterred by the downpour, the elderly group held placards and sang unity songs, demanding improved treatment after decades of dedicated service.
A retired Chief Superintendent of Police, Manir Lawal, a 67-year-old, spoke passionately on behalf of the group. He described the CPS as unfair and exploitative, leaving many retirees struggling financially. “We gave our lives to serve Nigeria. Now, in our old age, we’re left with almost nothing. This pension scheme must go,” Lawal said, standing alongside others in their 60s and 70s.
The protesters vowed to remain at the gate until National Assembly leaders addressed their demands. Security personnel kept watch, ensuring the demonstration remained peaceful despite the tense atmosphere.
The retirees’ plea highlights ongoing concerns about the welfare of Nigeria’s former law enforcement officers, who argue the current pension system fails to provide the dignity they earned through decades of service.
