Rooney tips Rice as future England captain after Everton display
Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has praised Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice as a future England captain following his influential performance in Arsenal’s 1–0 Premier League victory over Everton.
Rooney was at Goodison Park on Saturday as Mikel Arteta’s side secured a hard-fought win that returned them to the top of the table. Rice, 26, played a central role in the match, controlling midfield, breaking up play and providing leadership throughout the contest.
Speaking after the game, Rooney said Rice already shows the qualities required to take on greater responsibility with the national team and could eventually succeed Harry Kane as England captain.

“For me, he’s the one who’s probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots,” Rooney said. “His drive and his personality stand out. Everyone who knows him seems to love him.”
Rooney highlighted Rice’s intelligence and versatility during the Everton match, praising his decision-making and positional awareness.
“He was all over the pitch. His decision-making when to pass, where to pass and how to pass was a pleasure to watch,” he said. “He was splitting centre-backs, dropping in as a third centre-back, then getting into the box to try to score. Some of what he does is underrated.”
The former England captain added that Rice’s influence and character make him a natural leader within the squad.
“He’s the right one to take over for me because of his drive and personality. He’s irreplaceable for England,” Rooney said.
