Sanwo-Olu Inaugurates Three New Roads in Iru-Victoria Island

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday inaugurated three newly constructed roads in Eti Osa Local Government Area, unveiling key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity in the metropolis.

Sanwo-Olu commissioned the upgraded and dualized 2.8km-long Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru Road and Akiogun Road, which serve as crucial alternative routes to reduce gridlock around Victoria Island and Admiralty Circle Plaza.

He also inaugurated the newly constructed 550-metre Abudu Street in Victoria Island, providing a new connection to the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The projects, which cut travel time by 40 minutes, include improved drainage systems to address the area’s perennial flooding issues. They also serve as bypasses to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road currently under construction.

Sanwo-Olu described the road network as a vital part of his administration’s Transportation and Traffic Management Pillar under the THEMES Agenda. He emphasized that the projects would enhance mobility, boost economic activity, and improve the quality of life for residents.

“The upgrade and expansion of these roads reflect our belief that investing in infrastructure is investing in the future of Lagos. By reducing traffic gridlock, these projects will not only ease movement but also attract more businesses to the Lekki-Victoria Island axis, reinforcing its status as a premier business and real estate hub in Nigeria,” he said.

With the inauguration of the three roads, Sanwo-Olu has now commissioned 29 newly built infrastructure projects in the last three months.

He also revealed that 17 additional road projects are at various stages of completion and would be commissioned before the end of the first quarter.

The Governor confirmed that construction of the Green Line rail project, which will pass through Eti Osa, is set to commence this year.

The State Government has already begun expanding the Lekki-Epe Expressway to create the right-of-way for the rail project.

“We are working with the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated and our contractors to start the Green Line this year. The project, which will begin in Victoria Island and terminate in Ibeju Lekki, will be a game-changer for transportation along the Eti Osa corridor,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu urged residents and stakeholders to take ownership of the new infrastructure and ensure its protection from vandalism.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, noted that the projects were designed to provide alternative routes and ease congestion on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, aligning with the state’s broader infrastructure development goals.

The Oniru of Iru Kingdom, Oba Gbolahan Lawal, expressed gratitude to the Governor for addressing the traffic challenges faced by motorists and commuters in the area.

He added that the improved roads would spur economic growth and increase property values.

“These roads will enhance economic activities in Iru Kingdom and bring greater prosperity in terms of productivity. By this gesture, we reaffirm our loyalty to the leadership of the state,” the monarch said.
