Sanwo-Olu’s Tourism Adviser Clarifies ‘Melting Pot’ Comment

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe, has clarified his earlier remark describing Lagos as a ‘melting pot’ after facing criticism for welcoming an artist accused of cultural appropriation.

In a statement, Aregbe emphasized that Lagos is “Yoruba land. This is undeniable, indisputable and eternal.” He explained that while Lagos has welcomed people from across Nigeria and beyond, the Yoruba people built and continue to sustain its cultural foundation.

Aregbe said the phrase ‘melting pot’ was meant to highlight the accommodating spirit of the Yoruba people, not to diminish their heritage. “No one must deny that history, just as no one should disrespect the Yoruba roots of this city,” he added.

The clarification came after backlash on social media regarding Uzo Njoku, also known as Uzo Art, who labeled her event as ‘Owambe Lagos Party.’ Critics argued that the spelling and promotion misrepresented Yoruba culture.

Aregbe said he addressed these concerns directly with the artist, reaffirming his commitment to protect and defend Yoruba cultural heritage.

“As a thoroughbred Yoruba man, I stand firmly against any distortion or exploitation of our culture,” he stated.
