Somali Referee Omar Artan Lands UEFA Appointment

Somali referee Omar Artan is set to make history after being appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, marking a remarkable turnaround following his exclusion from the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Artan will oversee the prestigious encounter between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, becoming the first non-European referee to take charge of the annual UEFA showpiece.

The appointment comes just days after the Somali official was unable to participate in the FIFA World Cup despite earning selection through years of outstanding performances on the international stage.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest referees, Artan was named the Confederation of African Football’s Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025 and has been on FIFA’s international referees list since 2018.

His latest appointment has been viewed as recognition of both his professional excellence and his growing influence within global football officiating.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin praised Artan’s credentials, describing him as a talented and experienced referee who has consistently demonstrated high standards in African football competitions.

The decision followed collaboration between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football as part of broader efforts to strengthen football development and cooperation between Europe and Africa.

For many football observers, Artan’s journey from disappointment to one of European football’s biggest stages highlights the growing recognition of African match officials in international competitions.

Rather than seeing his World Cup setback define his story, the UEFA appointment offers a new chapter, one that places the Somali referee at the centre of one of football’s most prestigious fixtures.

As the football world turns its attention to Salzburg in August, Artan’s presence will serve as a powerful reminder that professional excellence can open new doors, even when others unexpectedly close.
