South-West PDP Stands Behind Makinde, Denounces Political Tension
IBADAN — The South-West leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party held a firm line on Monday, formally reaffirming its support for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and calling for a restoration of unity within the region’s political circles ahead of the 2027 general election.
During a press briefing at the party’s zonal headquarters, Adagunodo House in Ibadan, the Zonal Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, delivered a message focused on stability and institutional integrity. He emphasized that the party remains loyal to the National Working Committee under the leadership of Aminu Turaki.
Addressing the gathering, Atofarati highlighted the performance of Governor Makinde’s administration, framing it as a model of governance that the party intends to project as a credible, people-driven alternative for the country.
”Governor Makinde has shown stability, focus, and an unwavering commitment to delivering democratic dividends,” Atofarati said. “He continues to play a significant role in sustaining and strengthening multi-party democracy in Nigeria.”
The party leadership used the platform to categorically dispel rumors circulating on social media regarding a supposed impeachment plot against the governor. Describing these reports as baseless, the party officials termed them a calculated attempt to stir unnecessary political tension and distract from governance.
A significant portion of the briefing was dedicated to addressing the internal friction within the party, particularly comments made by the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose. Fayose had previously alleged, via his social media channels, that Governor Makinde was orchestrating a plan to remove the Olubadan of Ibadan. Both the Oyo State government and the palace have previously issued denials regarding these claims.
The South-West PDP leadership did not mince words in its response. Atofarati described Fayose’s remarks as irresponsible and self-serving. He further lamented that such rhetoric is harmful to public discourse, particularly because it attempts to politicize revered traditional institutions.
”Such conduct is unacceptable and stands condemned,” Atofarati stated, urging political actors to avoid manufacturing crises for selfish gain.
As the political temperature in Nigeria begins to rise in anticipation of the 2027 cycle, the party leadership is positioning itself as a buffer against what it describes as “disgruntled political actors” seeking to destabilize the region.
”Nigerians must not lose faith in democratic institutions despite present difficulties,” Atofarati added. “The PDP remains resolute in its commitment to people-focused governance and stands firmly with citizens who are currently confronting hardship and uncertainty.”
The briefing concluded with a call for calm and vigilance, signaling that the party intends to move past the recent public squabbles and focus on the upcoming political challenges with a united front.
