There has been a diversion of motorists from the Third Mainland Bridge this evening after a fire broke out near the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) base at Adekunle, heading towards Iyana Oworo.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has described the incident as a “devastating fire” in an alert shared on X (formerly Twitter), saying the blaze happened close to the RRS facility.

Emergency responders and traffic officers were quickly deployed to the scene, working to contain the fire and keep people safe.

Although the exact cause of the fire had not been confirmed by the time of reporting, LASTMA later announced that firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had arrived and were tackling the flames.

“The affected section of the road has been closed off to avoid accidents. We urge the public to stay away from the area and follow safety instructions,” LASTMA said.

The fire caused major disruption, with traffic building up on both sides of the bridge as vehicles were redirected to other routes.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far.

The Third Mainland Bridge is one of Lagos’ most important roads, stretching nearly 12 kilometres and connecting the mainland to Lagos Island. It serves thousands of commuters daily.

Fires, accidents, and repairs have caused disruptions on the bridge in the past, prompting regular safety measures and traffic diversions by the authorities.
