Ukraine Condemns Russian Strikes as Peace Talks Resume
Ukraine has condemned a fresh wave of Russian strikes that have claimed the life of one person and left 23 others injured, just as peace talks aimed at ending the ongoing war in the region are set to resume. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as “brutal” and “cynically ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin”, stating that it not only impacted the lives of Ukrainians but also sabotaged the peace process.
Delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the US are meeting in Abu Dhabi for the first trilateral peace talks since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Some progress has reportedly been made during the talks, though the crucial issue of territorial disputes remains unresolved.
The latest Russian strikes occurred overnight, with Kyiv’s mayor reporting one fatality and four injuries. In Kharkiv, 19 people were wounded during the early morning assault. The attacks have once again targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stating that the primary aim of the strikes was to damage the country’s power grid.
Sybiha’s condemnation came on the second day of the talks in Abu Dhabi. He argued that Putin’s actions demonstrated that he was not suited to participate in peace discussions and should instead face trial for his actions. This rhetoric follows US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about Putin’s involvement in the “Board of Peace”, an initiative focused on resolving global conflicts. However, Putin has not confirmed his participation in the body.

Zelensky’s remarks about the ongoing territorial dispute highlight the difficulty in reaching an agreement with Russia. He expressed that the issue of land ownership in the Donbas region, which is partly under Russian control, remains one of the most significant hurdles in the negotiations.
The conflict has left much of eastern Ukraine under Russian occupation, and Russia has consistently demanded that Ukraine cede these territories. However, Ukraine has steadfastly refused to relinquish any of its land.
Meanwhile, the US, which has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine through sanctions and military aid, continues to push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, the spectre of continued violence and a potential escalation of hostilities remains a major concern.
This diplomatic initiative is occurring against the backdrop of growing domestic unrest in both Russia and Ukraine, with protests erupting in various parts of Ukraine over economic hardships caused by the ongoing war. For many, these talks offer a glimmer of hope that an end to the war may soon be possible, although the road to peace remains fraught with challenges.
