UNIBEN Incident Forces Edo to Treat Internet Fraud as Cultism-Level Crime
By Shalom Ikuvbogie
The Edo State Government has announced that it will now treat internet fraud with the same level of enforcement and sanctions as cultism and kidnapping in the state.
The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, disclosed this on Monday during a media briefing in Benin City, following concerns over a violent incident at the main gate of the University of Benin.

He said reports linked the killing to a disagreement over the sharing of proceeds from internet fraud activities, describing the development as disturbing and unacceptable.
Afegbua stated that the government would no longer tolerate crimes associated with cyber fraud, warning that some individuals were increasingly using it as a cover to engage in violence and other criminal activities.

He added that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo remained committed to its ongoing crackdown on criminal elements across the state, stressing that the government’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism would continue while internet fraud would now receive similar attention in security operations aimed at restoring peace and order.

According to him, while progress had been made in reducing cult-related violence, the state still records isolated cases of kidnapping, and efforts would be sustained to address all forms of insecurity.
