UNIZIK Student Slumps, Dies While Playing Football on Campus

A 300-level student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Tochi Attah, tragically died after collapsing during a football match on campus.

The incident occurred on Monday near the Elmada Hostel area, though the student was not a resident of the hostel. Tochi, widely known among peers as “T-funds,” was studying microbiology and was said to have recently switched to a medical-related course.

His death was confirmed by the university’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, who said the school was aware of the incident and had launched an investigation to determine the exact cause.

“He was our student, but he wasn’t staying at Elmada Hostel. The incident happened on Monday, and we are still looking into the circumstances surrounding it,” Chukwurah said.

Tochi was the younger brother of Dr. Simon Attah, the All Progressives Congress chairman in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. His passing was made public by the President of Useh Youths, Sabastine Aku, who issued a statement on behalf of the Attah family and the Useh community.

“With heavy heart but total submission to God’s will, the Attah family and entire Useh Village sadly announce the passing of our son, brother, and friend, Tochi Martins, a.k.a. ‘T-Funds Exchange,” the statement read.

Tributes have poured in from friends, coursemates, and the university community, many expressing shock and grief at the sudden loss.
