NLC Reviews Strike Ultimatum Over Pension
Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are meeting today to decide on their next step as the seven-day strike notice issued to the Federal Government nears its deadline.
The ultimatum, which runs out on Thursday, followed labour’s demand for the refund of pension and Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) monies allegedly diverted by the Ministry of Finance, as well as the immediate constitution of the board of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

While the NSITF has admitted that half of the workers’ contributions under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme were deducted by the ministry, it said part of the money had been refunded and talks were ongoing to recover the rest.
The Federal Government last week announced the appointment of Opeyemi Agbaje as Chairman of the PenCom board, a move seen as a response to one of labour’s concerns.
Officials of the NLC’s National Administrative Council (NAC) are expected to weigh these developments before deciding whether to press ahead with the strike or suspend the ultimatum.
