Owo Church Attack: Aiyedatiwa Vows Justice, Bolsters Security
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has reaffirmed his commitment to securing justice for the victims of the tragic June 5, 2022, terrorist attack at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, where 41 worshippers lost their lives and many others were injured.
Speaking at the 15th Episcopal Anniversary and 35th Priestly Ordination Anniversary of Bishop Jude Arogundade of the Ondo Catholic Diocese, the governor emphasized that protecting the lives and property of Ondo residents remains his administration’s top priority.
The attack, carried out by suspected terrorists during a Sunday Mass, left the community in shock. Security agencies, through coordinated efforts between federal and state authorities, have since apprehended suspects, including Idris Omeiza, Al-Quasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar, who are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Aiyedatiwa called for unity in the fight against terrorism and other forms of crime, urging citizens to stand together to heal the wounds of the past and build a safer future. “We will not rest until justice is served for the Owo victims,” he said. “Together, we can overcome terror and ensure peace in our state.”

To strengthen security, the governor revealed that his administration recently acquired 75 Hilux vehicles equipped with advanced security technology to support law enforcement operations.
He also noted that ongoing logistical support is provided to security agencies monthly, contributing to Ondo State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s safest states. This enhanced security, he added, has attracted significant investment, boosting economic activity as residents go about their daily lives with greater confidence.
In his address, Bishop Jude Arogundade expressed gratitude to the government and people of Ondo State for their support, particularly for the return of missionary schools to the Catholic Church, while emphasizing the church’s commitment to delivering quality education rooted in strong moral values.
Reflecting on his 35 years as a priest and 15 years as a bishop, Arogundade encouraged newly ordained priests to remain dedicated to their faith and service to humanity.
