Tinubu’s Aide, Aliyu Audu, Resigns Over Alleged Moves to Create One-Party State
Mr. Aliyu Audu has resigned from his position as Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Affairs.
His resignation letter, dated 8th June 2025, was submitted through the office of the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
In a statement accompanying his resignation, Audu said his decision was driven by conscience, not rebellion. He accused the APC-led federal government of attempting to suppress opposition and reduce Nigeria to a one-party state — a move he described as a betrayal of democratic principles.
Audu stated that although he does not support the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he could not be part of a government that crushes dissent for political dominance. He warned that silencing alternative voices is not leadership, but regression.
He emphasised that true democracy thrives on competition of ideas, not political intimidation, adding that even God allows freedom of belief and disbelief to coexist.

Audu said he remains supportive of the administration’s economic reforms, which he contributed to bringing into power.
However, he expressed concern over what he called the loss of progressive and democratic values, particularly with the alliance between President Tinubu and Nyesom Wike.
Despite stepping down, he hinted that political debates would continue, urging his critics to prepare for more back-and-forth exchanges.
