ADC faults APC over judges’ housing claims
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the public celebration of newly commissioned residential quarters for judges, saying such recognition gives the impression that judicial welfare depends on political favour rather than constitutional duty.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said while providing decent housing, security and welfare for judges is necessary, it should not be presented as a personal achievement of political office holders. According to the ADC, such provisions are funded by taxpayers and remain the responsibility of government.
The party expressed concern that the celebration of the project and the commendation of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, could weaken public confidence in the independence of the judiciary. It said portraying the Executive as a benefactor to the courts risks suggesting that judges’ welfare is tied to the goodwill of political leaders.

ADC noted that in a democratic system based on separation of powers, the judiciary must be seen as independent and not influenced by other arms of government. It argued that public displays linking judicial welfare to political actors could raise questions about neutrality, especially at a time when courts handle election disputes and cases involving government officials.
The party also dismissed claims that such projects strengthen judicial independence, stating that true independence is reflected in institutional autonomy, financial freedom and adherence to the rule of law rather than the commissioning of buildings.
It further warned that continued public endorsement of political figures in relation to judicial welfare may deepen existing public doubts about the courts. The ADC urged the judiciary to remain cautious in its engagements with the Executive to avoid perceptions that could affect its credibility.

The party maintained that the judiciary belongs to the public and should not be seen as aligned with any political group or government officials.
