A recent outbreak of anthrax in Zamfara State has prompted the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to issue a warning to Nigerians, urging them to take immediate precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.
According to the ministry, anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which can affect animals and humans. The disease is zoonotic, meaning it can spread from animals to humans.
The ministry has confirmed that the outbreak occurred in a farm in Zamfara State, and has advised livestock farmers to put in place preventive measures, such as risk assessment, surveys, and ring vaccination of susceptible animals in high-risk areas.
Symptoms of anthrax include fever, coughing, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, itching, and bleeding from major openings. The ministry has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans.

To stay safe, the public is advised to avoid direct contact with sick or dead animals, report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans, and adhere to all preventive guidelines issued by relevant authorities.
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has assured Nigerians that it is working closely with relevant stakeholders to contain the spread of the disease and prevent further outbreaks. The ministry has also called on states bordering Zamfara to take immediate steps to prevent the spread of the disease.
The public is urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to take all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of anthrax.
