China Grants Nigeria $1M for Flood Relief Efforts

The People’s Republic of China has extended a $1 million grant to Nigeria to bolster flood relief efforts in the northern region, where communities have been ravaged by severe flooding.

The agreement, formalized through an Exchange of Notes, was signed in Abuja, marking a significant step in the growing partnership between the two nations.

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, You Dunhai, emphasized the grant as a symbol of solidarity, noting that China, too, has faced devastating floods and understands Nigeria’s challenges. “This support reflects our shared commitment to stand by each other in times of need,” he said during the ceremony.

He also highlighted the strengthening ties between the two countries, referencing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024, which deepened cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and agriculture.

Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, who led the signing, expressed gratitude for the timely aid, describing it as a lifeline for flood-affected families. “This grant will help rebuild lives and livelihoods in our hardest-hit communities,” he said, pledging transparent use of the funds. A joint oversight committee, including representatives from the Chinese Embassy, will ensure the money is used effectively.

The grant aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing relief programs and complements China’s broader support for Africa, including President Xi Jinping’s recent policy granting zero-tariff access to African exports. This initiative is expected to boost Nigeria’s economy by creating jobs and expanding trade opportunities.

Ambassador You, marking his one-year anniversary in Nigeria, reaffirmed China’s dedication to fostering mutual respect and sustainable development. “Our partnership with Nigeria continues to grow, rooted in equality and shared goals,” he said, offering condolences to those affected by the floods.

The funds are expected to provide immediate relief to northern communities, supporting efforts to restore stability and hope to thousands displaced by the disaster
