Court Bars Woman from Using Ex-Husband’s Name 11 Years After Divorce

A customary court in Rumuogba, Rivers State, has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor can no longer bear her former husband’s surname, 11 years after their divorce.

The ruling followed a suit, OCC/9/2021, filed by Chief Sam Ngbor, who sought a court order restraining his ex-wife from using his name.

After hearing submissions from the claimant’s counsel, E.O. Erhirhi Esq, and the defendant’s counsel, R.U. Egwenre Esq, the court granted the request.

The court ruled that Mrs. Ngbor has no right to continue using the name “Ngbor” or “Sam-Ngbor” without the express permission of her former husband.

It further ordered her to revert to her maiden name or any other name of her choice, except those associated with her ex-husband.

Additionally, the judgment restrained her from identifying or presenting herself as Mrs. Kate Ngbor or Mrs. Kate Sam-Ngbor in any form.
