Court Fines Senator Natasha N5m for Contempt Over Facebook Post

The Federal High Court in Abuja has found Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt for violating a previous court order with a Facebook post.
Justice Binta Nyako, who delivered the ruling on Friday, said the suspended senator representing Kogi Central mocked the court’s gag order by publishing a satirical apology to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on April 7.
The court ruled that the post, made on her official Facebook page, ridiculed its instructions and undermined ongoing legal proceedings. As a result, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was ordered to publish a proper apology in two national newspapers and again on her Facebook page within seven days.

In addition, the court imposed a N5 million fine on the lawmaker, clarifying that the contempt charge stemmed from a civil matter.
Although the contempt proceedings were initiated by Senate President Akpabio, the court did not grant him any specific relief in its decision.
