Crypto Investors – The Story of the Q1 2025 Crash

Dear Crypto Investors,

The start of 2025 was filled with dreams. We hoped for a fresh beginning, for new opportunities, and for better days but the first quarter of the year had other plans.

In just three months, the crypto market lost a staggering $633.5 billion. Fear was everywhere fear of a global recession, fear from big hacks, and fear of the unknown. Many of us watched in shock as our investments shrank before our eyes.

Trading slowed too. Daily trading volumes dropped by 27.3%. What was once a lively market became quiet. Even the biggest exchanges saw their numbers fall.

At first, it did not seem so bad. In January, Donald Trump’s inauguration brought a short wave of hope. Some thought political change might boost the market but that excitement faded quickly.

Then came the hack of the Bybit exchange. It shook everyone’s confidence. One by one, investors started pulling out, trying to protect what they had left.

Bitcoin stayed strong compared to others, keeping 59.1% of the market but even Bitcoin fell, losing 11.8% of its value. Meanwhile, gold, the old symbol of safety, increased by 18%. U.S. Treasury bonds also became more popular. People ran toward safety.

Still, there were small lights in the darkness. Stable coins like Tether (USDT) grew their share slightly, reaching 5.2%. USD Coin (USDC) climbed back to the number seven spot, passing Dogecoin.

Ethereum (ETH) had a tough time. Its market share dropped to just 7.9%, the lowest since 2019. Even though ETH struggled, some tokens like XRP and BNB stood firm, showing the power of strong communities.

DeFi (decentralised finance) also suffered. The total value locked (TVL) fell by 27.5%, dropping from $177.4 billion to $128.6 billion. Ethereum’s DeFi dominance fell too, from 63.5% to 56.6%.

Other networks like Solana and Base also lost money but they held on and even grew their market share a little.

In the middle of all this chaos, a new blockchain called Berachain launched on February 6. It surprised everyone by quickly gathering $5.2 billion in TVL. Its Boyco pre-deposit vaults alone attracted about $2.3 billion. Berachain became a name to watch.

In decentralised exchange (DEX) trading, Solana had an early victory. In January, it captured 52% of on-chain trades, thanks to a wave of political memecoins like $TRUMP but the memecoin magic faded fast. By March, Ethereum fought back and reclaimed the top spot with 30.1% of DEX market share.

Solana dropped to 23.4%. New challengers like Sonic and Berachain shook up the rankings. Old players like Optimism and Polygon did not give up easily, holding strong for much of the quarter.

Despite all the pain, one thing stayed true: The spirit of crypto did not die. New projects still launched. New ideas still came true.

The first quarter of 2025 was a harsh reminder. Crypto is a place of ups and downs, of risks and rewards. Some dreams were lost. Some fortunes were wiped out but hope stayed alive.

In this world, hope (believe) is everything. Better days are still ahead. Keep believing. Keep building and Keep dreaming.

In crypto, hope never dies.

Yours in the journey, a Fellow Believer.
