Deported Nigerians Find Temporary Haven in Ghana
Ghana has started receiving Nigerian nationals deported from the United States, with 14 individuals, mostly Nigerians and one Gambian, already processed.
The information which was announcedon Wednesday by the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, noted that the deportees arrived in Ghana before being sent back to Nigeria and other home countries.
This follows an agreement between Ghana and the US, part of President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policy targeting millions of undocumented migrants. Mahama noted that Ghana’s participation aligns with West African protocols allowing visa-free travel. “Our regional agreements make it possible to welcome our West African brothers and sisters,” he told reporters.
While the number of deportees Ghana will accept remains unclear, the deal is part of a wider US push to partner with African nations.
Rwanda, Eswatini, and South Sudan have also received small groups of deportees, with Rwanda agreeing to take up to 250.

The policy has raised concerns among migrant rights groups about the safety of those returned. The US has been urging African leaders to cooperate, including during a July meeting with five West African presidents, though Mahama was not present.
