Edo Governor Vows to Fix Roads, Backs APC Candidate in By-Election

The Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to repair the state’s dilapidated roads, inherited from the previous administration, to boost economic growth and improve residents’ lives.

Speaking during a tour of damaged roads in Edo Central Senatorial District, the governor outlined his commitment to infrastructure development while rallying support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the upcoming August 16 senatorial by-election.

Inspecting roads like Onewa-Udomi-Ibhiolulu-Afada-Idumoza-Eko-Uwaya-Ewora, New Agbor Road, and Illushin Road in Uromi, Okpebholo highlighted their poor condition as a major challenge left by former Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration. He emphasized the economic importance of these routes, particularly New Agbor Road, which connects Edo to eastern Nigeria, including Agbor, Asaba, and Onitsha. “These roads are critical for trade and movement. We’ll fix them soon to revive our economy,” he said.

Okpebholo revealed that his recent discussion with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reinforced his resolve to prioritize road repairs. “The President urged governors to address bad roads, and we’re here to act on that directive,” he added, promising swift action on the Illushi Road, a key link across the country.

On the political front, the governor launched a door-to-door campaign in Uromi for APC’s senatorial candidate, Hon. Joe Ikpea, urging residents to vote for him in the by-election to replace Okpebholo in the Senate. Addressing supporters, he described the election as a chance for Edo Central’s youth to demonstrate their political strength and secure APC’s victory across all five local government areas in the district. “We’re not leaving anything to chance. APC will win convincingly,” he said.

Okpebholo criticized the opposition’s past governance, pointing to neglected schools, roads, and electricity as evidence of their failure. He contrasted this with his administration’s focus on delivering tangible improvements for Edo residents. “Our people deserve better, and we’re already showing our commitment to change,” he said.

The governor called on voters to reject other parties and back Ikpea, framing the by-election as a step toward strengthening APC’s influence ahead of the 2027 presidential election, where he aims to deliver 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu.
