By Shalom Ikuvbogie

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has reassured fans that he is recovering well after collapsing during his country’s friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday.

The 34-year-old was taken to hospital after falling to the ground in the 64th minute of the game in Odense, prompting the match to be abandoned. Medical personnel quickly attended to him while players from both teams formed a protective circle around him.

In a message shared on social media, Eriksen said he was back home with his family and recovering.

“I want to let everyone know that I am doing well,” he said.

The former Manchester United midfielder explained that his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) had delivered a shock during the incident, adding that the situation was different from the cardiac arrest he suffered during the European Championship in 2021.

According to Eriksen, the device functioned as intended and his recovery had already begun.

“For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children,” he said.

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen said Eriksen was briefly unconscious but responded after his pacemaker activated. He added that the player was in good condition and had spoken with medical staff following the incident.

The collapse brought back memories of Eriksen’s medical emergency during Euro 2020, which forced him to spend several months away from football before making a remarkable return to the game.
