First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Champions Maternal and Newborn Health on World Health Day 2025

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has issued a poignant message on World Health Day 2025, underscoring the urgent need to prioritize maternal and newborn health.

In a statement released by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, Tinubu emphasized that investing in the health of mothers and their newborns is both a moral imperative and a fundamental building block of sustainable development.

According to Tinubu, “Every day, far too many women and newborns lose their lives due to preventable complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.

No mother should have to risk her life to bring a child into the world, and no newborn should be denied a fair chance at survival.

“She stressed that the theme of World Health Day 2025, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” serves as a timely reminder of the need for collective action.

The First Lady extended her appreciation to health workers nationwide, acknowledging their tireless efforts in pursuit of a healthier world. She emphasized, “On this World Health Day, let us all strive to create a world where mothers can safely give birth and children can live healthy to reach their full potential.”

Globally, the stakes are high, with approximately 287,000 women dying during pregnancy or childbirth in 2020, and 70% of these deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.

The World Health Organization highlights that most maternal deaths are preventable with timely access to quality healthcare. By prioritizing maternal and newborn health, we can significantly reduce mortality rates and create a brighter future for generations to come.
