Nigeria, India Battle to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria and India have officially submitted bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a milestone as the Games celebrate their centenary. Nigeria proposes Abuja as the host city, while India has put forward Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
If chosen, Nigeria would become the first African nation to host the event, which began in 1930 as the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada. Previous African bids have faced challenges, including Durban losing its 2022 hosting rights due to financial constraints, while India successfully hosted the Games in Delhi in 2010.
Commonwealth Sport officials praised both countries for their ambitious proposals and commitment to creating lasting benefits for local communities.
Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said the submissions reflect the enduring importance of the Games and the growing appeal of the organization’s sustainable hosting model.

The 2030 Evaluation Commission will now review the proposals and make recommendations to the Executive Board and the Commonwealth Sport Movement’s 74 member nations. The decision is expected to be finalized at the General Assembly in Glasgow in November.
Katie Sadleir, CEO of Commonwealth Sport, noted that the Games continue to attract top athletes worldwide and remain a significant milestone in the international sporting calendar.
Both India and Nigeria have emphasized how hosting the centenary Games could advance national sports agendas, infrastructure development, and community engagement.
The announcement signals a renewed focus on sustainable, inclusive, and impactful Games, with both nations hoping to leave a lasting legacy through the 2030 event.
