NNPC official addressing fuel quality concerns in Nigeria.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed claims that it sells substandard petrol with a high burn rate, calling the allegations misleading. This comes after a viral video suggested that petrol purchased from an NNPC station burns faster than fuel from a competitor.

In the video, a content creator claimed he bought a litre of petrol from a Dangote-affiliated MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at ₦925 and another litre from an NNPC station in Ojodu Berger for ₦945. He then poured the fuel into two generators, claiming the NNPC fuel ran out after 17 minutes, while the Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.

Reacting to the video, NNPC spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, said the experiment was unprofessional and lacked credibility.

“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading claims in the viral video, which suggests that our fuel burns faster. This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from amateur research that lacks accuracy and oversight,” Soneye said.

He assured the public that NNPC fuel is produced to meet the highest industry standards for efficiency, durability, and environmental safety.

Soneye revealed that most of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC stations in Lagos comes from the Dangote refinery, a reliable partner in local fuel production and energy security.

“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to our consumers,” he stated.

The NNPC condemned the video as an attempt to mislead the public and damage its reputation.

“This misleading video represents yet another desperate effort by economic saboteurs to create panic and distrust,” Soneye said. “We will not tolerate such misinformation and will take legal action against anyone who spreads false claims about our operations.”
