In a statement dated April 5, 2026, NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, expressed concern over comments allegedly made by the minister in reference to Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.

The union said Wike was quoted as saying, “If there’s any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” describing the statement as reckless and potentially dangerous, particularly coming from a senior government official.

According to the NUJ, the comment could have a chilling effect on journalists and media practitioners, raising fears about the safety of those engaged in critical reporting. The union noted that it initially withheld its response, anticipating a possible clarification or apology from the minister, but none was forthcoming.

“The minister’s statement constitutes a direct and unacceptable attempt to intimidate and silence the press,” the statement read, adding that such remarks undermine democratic principles and the role of the media in holding power to account.

The NUJ further urged the Federal Government to publicly condemn the statement and reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding press freedom and the independence of the media.

It also called on media organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to stand in solidarity in defence of journalists, stressing that a free and secure press remains essential to the sustenance of democracy.
