Obi Speaks on Rift With Atiku

By Shalom Ikuvbogie

Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has dismissed claims that he is avoiding former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Obi spoke on Friday during the Spier Dialogue 2026 held in Cape Town, South Africa, where he described Atiku as a respected leader and elder brother.

According to him, suggestions that he was distancing himself from the former vice-president were untrue, insisting that he had never run from anyone politically. He added that his approach to politics was simply different.

His remarks come months after both politicians attempted to build a coalition platform ahead of the 2027 elections using the African Democratic Congress. Obi had joined the party earlier in the year, with Atiku welcoming the move as a major step towards opposition unity.

However, the alliance later collapsed following internal disagreements and legal disputes within the party. Explaining his exit from the ADC, Obi said his decision was not based on personal differences with Atiku or party leaders, but on concerns over distractions caused by ongoing internal crises.
