Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to members of his cabinet, declaring that any commissioner who fails to wear the ‘Asiwaju cap’, popularly known as the President Bola Tinubu cap, will not be allowed into the state’s Executive Council (EXCO) meetings.

Governor Okpebholo gave the directive on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony of 20 newly appointed commissioners and members of various boards in Benin City.

He stated that his administration’s progress was made possible through the support of President Bola Tinubu, noting that previous elections in the state were lost by the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to lack of presidential backing.

“Before we begin, let me say this wouldn’t have been possible without a responsible President,” Okpebholo said. “We have conducted several elections here, and our major challenge was that the President was not with us. Now, you see this cap I am wearing? I will not forgive any commissioner who comes to EXCO without it. If you are in traditional attire and not wearing this Asiwaju cap, you are going back.”

The governor emphasized that his administration would not tolerate corruption or any action capable of undermining its integrity. He stressed that all appointments were based on merit and urged the new appointees to see their positions as a call to serve rather than an opportunity for personal gain.

“Your nominations did not come as a reward or patronage, but as a call to serve the people of Edo State,” he said. “This administration came into office on the promise of practical governance that directly impacts the lives of our people. Our focus is not on propaganda, but on service delivery and tangible results that can be felt in every community.”

Speaking on behalf of the appointees, Festus Ebea thanked Governor Okpebholo for the confidence reposed in them. He assured the governor of their loyalty and commitment to his developmental agenda and vision for Edo State.
