Osun activates local security to guard schools

Osun State has expanded its security network by bringing together local groups, traditional institutions and formal security agencies to protect schools and communities following rising threats in the South-West.

Governor Ademola Adeleke said the state had activated all layers of its security structure, combining service commanders with grassroots groups such as hunters, OPC, Agbekoya and Amotekun to strengthen vigilance across communities.

He said the move followed a series of consultations with stakeholders aimed at improving readiness against emerging security risks, noting that efforts had progressed from community-level coordination to an expanded State Security Council meeting.

Adeleke said traditional rulers would also play a key role, disclosing that he had reached out to the Osun State Traditional Council through the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, ahead of a wider engagement with monarchs across the state.

According to him, local intelligence from traditional institutions remains important in responding to security challenges, as they are closely linked to their communities.

The governor said the government was deploying intelligence gathering and coordinated action to secure all parts of the state, stressing that the safety of residents and schools remains a priority.

He urged residents to remain alert and support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities.

The steps come in response to recent incidents in the region, including an attack in Oyo State where armed men abducted pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, with reports that a teacher was killed while in captivity.
