Protest Erupts Over 16 Abducted Worshippers in Ekiti

Residents of Eda Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State staged a protest on Wednesday over the continued detention of 16 worshippers kidnapped by gunmen.

The victims were abducted on April 28 during an evening service at a Christ Apostolic Church after the attackers invaded the premises and killed the presiding pastor.

Despite raising and paying ₦10.5 million ransom, residents said the abductees have remained in captivity for 36 days, with the kidnappers making fresh demands of ₦50 million.

The protesters, including community leaders, women and youths, called on the Federal Government, Ekiti State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the victims.

They also demanded improved security in the area, including the establishment of a functional police division, deployment of forest guards and a military presence near the Ekiti-Kwara border.

Residents said the abductees include mostly women, two young boys, elderly persons and young children, raising concerns about their condition after weeks in captivity without proper care.
