Sowunmi Hints at Dumping PDP, Sets Condition to Back Tinubu
A former spokesman to ex-presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has said he would leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if he decides to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Sowunmi made the statement on Tuesday evening while speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time. He explained that he would only support Tinubu after formally joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“If I’m going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party,” he said.
He dismissed the idea of remaining in one political party while backing a candidate from another. “I don’t believe in the nonsense that says you are in one party while supporting someone else,” he added.
Sowunmi said he has spent 28 years in the PDP and expressed disappointment with the current state of the party.

“I don’t have time for pretence. If I’m not there, I’m not there. I have been in PDP for 28 years, and most of them don’t even have that record of 28 days,” he said.
He also stated that he had repeatedly called for reforms within the PDP but said his efforts were not taken seriously.
“I have screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party,” he said. “Why will anyone with sense in his head stay in a party when you are telling them to repair the party?”
Sowunmi noted that several factors could influence his final decision, including developments in his state and ethnic background.
“There is a very strong possibility, looking at what is going on in my environment, looking at my state where I come from, looking at my tribe and desire – there is a very strong possibility that I may likely leave,” he said.
