Tinubu Mourns Buhari, Calls Emergency FEC Meeting

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a hospital in the United Kingdom.

In a tribute issued on Sunday night, Tinubu described Buhari as a soldier and statesman who served Nigeria with honour and unwavering dedication. He said the late president’s life was marked by discipline, integrity, and an unshakeable belief in the unity of the country.

“President Buhari was, to the very core, a patriot,” Tinubu said. “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength and a deep commitment to Nigeria’s progress.”

Tinubu announced that national flags will fly at half-mast for seven days in honour of Buhari and said the Federal Government will give him full state honours. An emergency Federal Executive Council meeting will hold on Tuesday to formally honour the late leader.

Buhari, who served first as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1984 to 1985 and later as elected president from 2015 to 2023, was remembered by Tinubu as a leader who put country above self and confronted corruption without compromise.

Offering condolences to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, his children, and the entire family, Tinubu also extended sympathy to the people of Katsina State and the Daura Emirate.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” Tinubu said.
