Tinubu Picks Yilwatda to Lead APC in Political Reset

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is turning a new page as Professor Nentawe Yilwatda steps in as national chairman, following a quiet agreement sealed by President Bola Tinubu and party governors.

Yilwatda replaces Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned after months of pressure and citing health concerns. The party’s National Executive Committee is expected to officially confirm the decision today in Abuja.

This move is seen by insiders as part of a broader effort to reposition the party, calm internal tensions, and prepare early for the 2027 elections. Yilwatda, 56, is a former university lecturer, electoral commissioner, and most recently, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs. He also ran for governor under the APC in Plateau State in 2023.

A party source familiar with the talks said the decision was not just about filling a vacant seat, but about balancing interests. “There’s a strong message here. The party is trying to look forward and reconnect with its roots,” the source said.

Tinubu picks Yilwatda

Yilwatda’s North-Central background, clean record, and relatively younger age made him a unifying choice at a time the party is struggling with internal fatigue. His Christian identity also brings religious diversity into APC’s leadership mix, which some party members believe is necessary for broader appeal.

Though new to APC’s top hierarchy, Yilwatda’s rise has been swift. After leaving INEC in 2021, he joined the APC, contested for governor, and later earned a spot in Tinubu’s cabinet. His political loyalty and administrative background reportedly played a big role in his selection.

With the APC facing public discontent and internal rifts, many within the party hope Yilwatda’s leadership will help steady the ship and restore faith in the party ahead of the next national elections.
