United States of Biafra Seeks Recognition from President Tinubu

The Simon Ekpa-led United States of Biafra (USB) has formally written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, requesting recognition from the Nigerian government.

In a three-page open letter signed by Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, the Acting Head of State and Deputy Prime Minister of the group, the USB claimed that Biafra was re-declared in Finland on November 29, 2024, following a referendum in which over 50 million Biafrans participated.

According to Orabueze, the request aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, which outlines the criteria for statehood.

“The redeclaration of the Republic of Biafra took place in Lahti, Finland, during a convention where Biafrans from all over the world gathered to proclaim the restoration of Biafra’s 1967 independence and officially adopted its new name, the United States of Biafra,” she wrote.

She stated that the Biafran nation now consists of 40 states and has met all the requirements for sovereignty, including governance, territorial control, and diplomatic relations.

The letter also emphasized the USB’s commitment to diplomatic engagement, urging Nigeria to acknowledge its sovereignty and facilitate a peaceful and structured dissolution.

“The United States of Biafra has come to stay, and our arms are open to receive Nigeria for constructive dialogue in pursuit of a peaceful and sustainable separation,” the letter read.

Orabueze noted that several nations, including Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Zambia, have recognized the United States of Biafra.

She urged the Nigerian government to follow suit to ensure stability and cooperation between both entities.

The letter further outlined the USB’s vision for governance, economic growth, and international partnerships, stating that the new nation aims to foster investment, create job opportunities, and maintain security along shared borders with Nigeria.

As of now, the Nigerian government has yet to respond to the request.
