Buhari’s Foreign Medical Trips driven by Personal Choice, Not Distrust in Nigerian Doctors

Former media aide to Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has revealed that the former President’s frequent medical trips abroad were driven by personal preference, not a lack of faith in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

This was revealed when he made an appearance on Channels Television’s “Inside Sources” on Saturday, where he clarified that Buhari relied on Nigerian doctors throughout his presidency, countering claims that the late president sought foreign care due to inadequate local expertise.

Shehu emphasized that Buhari was supported by a dedicated Nigerian medical team, including a chief personal physician and a state house clinic led by an experienced medical consultant. “His immediate health needs were always met by professionals here,” Shehu said.

Furthermore, he highlighting the competence of Nigerian doctors, many of whom are respected globally. He noted that Buhari’s trips abroad stemmed from longstanding relationships with overseas medical providers, not a rejection of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

This perspective challenges earlier comments by Femi Adesina, another former Buhari aide, who suggested the late president’s survival depended on foreign treatment. Shehu, however, stressed that Nigerian doctors played a central role in Buhari’s care.
