Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has rejected recent comments by the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding the integrity of the upcoming September 21, 2024, governorship election in the state. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor described Obi’s allegations—that the election process lacks fairness—as not only unfounded but also disrespectful to the will of the people of Edo State, who, he emphasized, exercised their democratic rights peacefully and transparently. "The Edo State Governorship Election was conducted with the highest standards of electoral integrity, as confirmed by both local and international observers. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ensured a level playing field, and the process was widely acknowledged as credible,” the statement read. “Mr. Obi’s pronouncements are not supported by any credible evidence and appear to be driven by political expediency rather than genuine concern for democratic principles. It is regrettable that a figure of his standing would choose to undermine the democratic process with such baseless allegations,” it continued. The statement further urged Peter Obi to retract his comments and respect the mandate freely given by the people of Edo State. “We implore him to contribute constructively to Nigeria’s democratic discourse rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric,” it added. Itua emphasized that the peace and stability of Edo State are paramount and affirmed that Governor Okpebholo would not tolerate any attempt to undermine the state’s democratic progress. He reiterated that the people of Edo State have spoken, and their voice must be respected.
