Obi Faults Tinubu’s Economic Policies, Calls for Reforms

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticized the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as ineffective and detrimental to Nigeria’s economic stability.

Speaking on Arise News on Tuesday, Obi faulted Tinubu’s decision to float the naira without boosting productivity, arguing that it has worsened the nation’s debt burden and increased the cost of debt servicing beyond allocations for critical sectors like health and education.

“The current administration inherited a debt of about N17 trillion, and in just two years, it has risen to over N170 trillion,” Obi stated. “Meanwhile, 70 percent of our primary healthcare centers are not functioning, and education remains underfunded.”

Obi, a former Anambra State governor, insisted that if he were in power, the country would have seen significant improvements within two years. He pledged to prioritize investment in production, tackle corruption, and reduce the cost of governance.

He also criticized the high interest rates under Tinubu, arguing that businesses are struggling to survive. “When the interest rate is over 40 percent, how do you expect businesses to thrive?” he asked.

On his continued membership in the Labour Party, Obi accused the federal government of fueling divisions within the party but reaffirmed his commitment to working with other political leaders for the country’s good.

He condemned the handling of the Rivers State political crisis, stating that democracy cannot function without an independent judiciary, a strong legislature, and freedom of speech.

Obi, however, refrained from confirming his candidacy for the 2027 elections, emphasizing that his priority is to build a Nigeria that works rather than seeking power for its own sake.
